An increasing proportion of our elderly people are losing their golden years to dementia. There are roughly 5-6 million Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) patients in the U.S. and an equal amount of people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
AD was unknown prior to the 20th century and this epidemic is primarily hitting developed countries. Japan, a developed country with a low prevalence of AD and has avoided copper plumbing, is a unique exception.
An article in the Townsend Letter, by George J. Brewer, MD and John D. MacArthur, outlines a hypothesis that inorganic copper toxicity is a major factor in the AD epidemic. They document the connection and mechanism of inorganic copper’s toxicity, and give prevention suggestions to avoid AD and lessen the cognitive losses.
We are getting to much inorganic coppper from sources such as, nutritional supplements and our water supply. The leaching of copper from copper plumbing into our drinking water is a major causal factor in the AD epidemic. In a future blog I will show the link between fluoridation and copper leaching from our copper plumbing into our drinking water.
They document the many studies that show addition of copper at levels far below the EPA standards increases AD in animals. The article is in our reception room for reading or copying for more detailed information.
Simple ways to help you avoid AD and all the dementia diseases as you get older:
- Avoid all copper-containing nutritional supplements. Organic copper, that your body needs is found in many food sources and you do not need more.
- Zinc supplements at low levels show promise in slowing or possibly halting AD cognitive losses. Note: zinc supplements should be taken between meals on an empty stomach.
- Reduce your meat intake. The U.S. allows unregulated residue of copper sulfate on our foods and high levels of copper in U. S . beef.
- Drink and cook only with filtered water, i.e. reverse osmosis or distilled water. Inexpensive copper test strips are available from www.sensafe.com .
Avoid excessive inorganic copper, get adequate zinc supplements, drink filtered water and reduce the amount of meat in you diet to help avoid and lessen AD and dementia in your future. Watch for an up-coming blog the will show how fluoridation is helping poison everyone and increasing our dementia epidemic.
