The mainstream medical community and various government agencies are all recommending the annual flu vaccine, esp. for at risk population groups (infants, children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses). As we saw in last month’s newsletter the flu vaccine is not very effective and very risky in these same populations. These population groups have a compromised immune system condition and this may be the more important focus to preventing the flu that the vaccine.
An alternative strategy to prevent and fight the flu more effectively and with less risk should then enhance the body’ defense system against the flu virus. This would include promoting nutritional and lifestyle supports for the immune system and the addition of nutraceuticals, such as; herbals, botanicals, and dietary supplements for a strong defense against all outside invaders.
The following wide variety of adjunctive strategies for preventing and fighting the flu virus comes from numerous medical doctors and clinics. I would always recommend that you follow your own personal medical doctors’ or health practitioners’ recommendations on the products to use and dosages that would be best for you and your family.
Nutritional advice would always start with avoiding all sugars and processed foods, increasing organic fruits (esp. oranges) and organic vegetable soups. Foods containing carotenoids (carrots, kale, apricots, mango, and papaya) help regulate the immune system. Increase your Omega 3 fatty acids (found in fish, flax seed, hemp seed oils and walnuts) to decrease inflammation. Nutrients such as zinc, copper, selenium, Vitamin A, C, B series, and D3 all can be powerful enhancers and modulators of your immune system. Garlic, ginger, green tea and lots of clean water work togather to strengthen your defense against the flu virus. Always keep ginger tea available for nausea!
Lifestyle factors such as washing your hands frequently, getting plenty of sleep, moderate regular exercise and reducing stress have been shown to improve your immune system and are even recommended by our own CDC government organization.
Boosting the immune system with nutraceuticals can be very confusing because of the almost endless recommendations by many different practitioners and sources. These are the nutraceuticals that seem to be the most effective and most commonly listed in multiple recommendation lists.
Nutrients, herbs and botanicals with good scientific agreement of nutritional benefit for strengthening the immune system include:
Andrographis paniculata, Acanthopanax senticosa, green tea, turmeric, grape seed extract, Ashwagandha, Korean ginseng, Oregon grape, shiitake mushroom, Echinacea purpurea, Coriolus versicolor, Astragalus, Elderberry, Oleander, and Chinese star anise oil( this is the herb used to make Tamiflu). Other helpful adjunctive therapies could include: colloidal silver, lysine, SSKI(do not use with colloidal sliver), thymic protein A, Berderine, DMSO, Germanium-132, and beta-glucan.
There are many local (San Diego county) health practitioners that can provide powerful tools to fight a virus infection with anti-viral and immune boosting IVs, “No flu shots“, and advice on alternative therapies if you need a health practitioner to get advice from. My first two local sources of health advice come from Gary Shima, MD and Lauren Noel, ND. See these and other referral recommendations on the link page of my website (www.wellnessdentalcare.com) for contact information.
These alternative strategies and supplements all help build up a strong immune system, anti-oxidant function, fight oxidative stress and modulate your own natural defense against all viruses and bacteria you may be exposed to during your daily activities.
Start to learn more about your own body’s needs and use your medical doctor to discuss options and make recommendations that are tailored to your own body. The more you know about your options tha more you are in control of your body’s natural defense system.
To your Optimal Health and Vitality with Beautiful Smiles.
