Probably!
You and almost every adult you meet will have or has gum disease.
80% of
all adults will have periodontal (gum) infection in their lifetime.
This infection
may have been caused from: genetics, infection from family members or
partners, lowered immune response, and overgrowth of specific oral
bacteria. Certain medications and medical conditions like diabetes,
coronary heart disease, hormonal imbalance, vascular disease, and smoking
may also be contributing factors to contracting periodontal (gum) disease.
Symptoms:
Some people may experience swelling, sore or bleeding gums, bad breath or
loose teeth. However, most people have no symptoms until the
diagnosis is very advanced. The good news is that new diagnostic
tests can detect the infection in the earliest stages of destruction
before the bone, teeth, and systemic health are compromised.
How are
Periodontal Infections Treated?: You start with a thorough
exam by a knowledgeable dentist including examination and x-rays of teeth
and gums, measuring of the gum pockets, and diagnostic tests as
indicated. The next treatment is planned for the unique needs of the
patient. Finally, a partnership is begun between the patient and the
dentist in order to approach the common goal of eradicating the bad
bacteria, healing the tissues, and strengthening the patient's own defense
system. |
