If you let your kids pick out their own candy at the grocery or convenience store. Watch out!

Some of the new sour candies on the market have a pH close to battery acid. Below is the list of some of the worst pH level candies on the market. They are dissolving your kid’s teeth as fast as battery acid would.

Your teeth start to dissolve at any pH below 4.0. Some of these candies are below that pH and some of them are very close to battery acid’s pH of 1.o. The manufactures make them sour to attract the consumer and stimulate the sour taste buds in your mouth. Most of these worst offenders are sour powders but some are sour gummy type candies that stick to the teeth for a long time.

If you would not put battery acid on your kids teeth, then avoid these candies that are dissolving your kids teeth and may require fillings or crowns.

Better snack options to help fight cavities and help avoid dental problems would be fresh fruit, carrots sticks, popcorn and any foods that are high in Arginine i.e. spinach, soy, seafood, nuts, seeds, coconut, and chocolate. Also they could brush right after their snacks to avoid some of the harmful affects of these snacks. All candy, gums and mints with the sugar, Xylitol, help push the bad bugs off the teeth and avoid cavities.

If you need advise or have questions, call or write to me and I would love to help.

A new study came out Tuesday from the Biodiversity Research Institute, a non-profit organization in Gorham, ME., that investigates this and other emerging environmental threats. They are find new research showing dangerously high levels of mercury in many Northeastern bird species, including rusty blackbirds, saltmarsh sparrows and wood thrushes.

Previous studies have shown mercury’s effects on loons and other fish-eating waterfowl, as well as bald eagles, panthers and otters. In one study, zebra finches lost the ability to hit high notes in mating songs when mercury levels rose, affecting reproduction.

“We’re seeing many other species in a much larger landscape of harm from mercury,” said the principal author, David C. Evers, who is the institute’s executive director. He called the EPA’s new stricter federal mercury standards, adopted last month and scheduled to take effect over the next four years, “an excellent step forward in reducing and minimizing the impact on ecosystems and improving ecological health, and therefore our own health.”

Most of this mercury exposure comes from the exhaust air when coal is burned in power plants. The gaseous mercury can drift hundreds of miles before settling back to earth, sometimes along with rain. The mercury can be absorbed by tree leaves, absorbed into plants and the soil, entering our natural food chain. Bacteria in the soil and other organisms can convert this mercury into the organic form, methyl mercury, a powerful neurotoxin.

The neurological and reproductive damage is spreading and getting more pronounced in many of the ecological species and mimic the effects of mercury on humans whose primary exposure is the mercury-silver fillings in their mouths.

“It’s incredibly important that someone is following what is happening to these birds,” said Joanna Burger, a behavioral ecologist at Rudgers University who has studied mercury contamination in animals. “The birds not only act as sentinels to what is happening in nature, but the results of these studies propose hypotheses for effects that have not yet been identified for people.”

Stay tune for more news and updates on the effects of mercury in our environment at www.wellnessdentalcare.com. I welcome any questions and comments that you may have on these important issues.

When you can’t floss or brush your teeth use this candy. This long-lasting oral health lozenge gives you fresher breath and cleaner teeth in between or as an alternative to regular brushing and flossing.

The Nuvora Company has developed a long-lasting lozenge, called Dentiva, which gives you that “professional cleaning” fresh breath and clean teeth feeling any time of the day. So when you don’t have time to brush after lunch, are driving all day in your car, traveling away from home or just want fresh breath for a meeting use this simple oral health candy.

Dentiva’s patented time-release (SuRe Technology) provides a programmed 1-hour delivery of the active ingredients. The essential oils (Thymol, Wintergreen, and Eucalyptus) are slowly released and bathe the teeth and gums for up to an hour. These essential oils help dissolve the sticky plaque on your teeth, kill up to 99.9% of the bad bacteria that cause gum disease, and neutralizes the acidic pH of your mouth. These and other natural ingredients, such as peppermint, menthol, sodium bicarbonate, and the natural sweetener, Xylitol, help give you an instant clean mouth that lasts for hours.

Other conventional mouthrinse, gum, and breath mint products are flushed away to fast, limiting their effectiveness and lasting benefits. The Dentiva lozenge is designed to dissolve slowly, delivering the cleaning and freshening ingredients consistently for up to an hour. Dentiva is also sugar and alcohol free so they are safe to use anytime and whenever you need them.

An added benefit of the Dentiva is the buffering ability it has in the mouth. Because it neutralizes the pH of the mouth, the teeth have time to re-mineralize damaged tooth structure and help reverse cavities. This health pH balance helps reduce the gingivitis (red gums) which is one of the first signs of more advanced gum disease.

The Nuvora Company has a convenient online way to purchase the product at www.nuvorainc.com or call 1-877-530-9811. I am so delighted with the results of this product that I offer it to all my patients. We can sell the product at my dental office also, at 1-760-729-9050.

Dentiva is a pleasant tasting, safe, effective, non-alcoholic, sugar-free, and easy way to reduce bad bacteria in the mouth and stop gum disease when you can’t brush or floss.

Fresher breath and cleaner teeth any time of the day!

If I asked 100 people which drinks were most harmful to their smiles, I bet I’d get back about 50 people who said, “coffee” and 40 people who said, “cola” and about 10 split between black tea or orange juice.

And you know what?

All of them would be wrong.

Here’s the list, from most to least harmful, according to research by von Fraunhofer, et al in a German industry journal (AGD Dentalnotes, Spring 2005):

KMX energy drink

Snapple Classic Lemonade

Red Bull

Gatorade

Powerade

Amp energy drink

Nantucket Nectars

Propel Fitness Water

Fanta Orange

Nestea with sweetened lemon iced tea

Arizona iced tea

Coca-cola

Black tea

These are ranked based on the amount of tooth enamel destroyed after 14 days of continuous exposure.

I guess I’m not surprised that some of the new energy drinks are the most toxic. But lemonade? Iced tea? And I didn’t expect water to be there, especially “fitness” water. And cola is way down on the list, despite its urban-legend status as the liquid that can loosen a rusted bolt (which happens to be true) dissolve a nail (this one is false) or shine a chrome bumper (true).

As usual, your grandmother’s advice to stick to plain, ol’ fashioned water is probably best. If your kids drink this stuff, either persuade them otherwise or send them to me for frequent checkups!

The Intelliherb company, in collaboration with Dr. John’s Candies, have developed an exciting new product that will change dentistry forever and improve the lives of all those people that hate to go to the dentist because of new cavities. Now there is a safe, effective, delicious, sugar-free, herbal lollipop that kills cavity-causing bacteria. Int J. Oral Sci. (2011) 3:13-20.

Recently, after years of testing dental-specific herbs, a microbiologist, Dr. Wenyuan Shi, PhD, chair of the Oral Biology Department at UCLA, identified a specific herbal formula that kills the cavity-forming bugs(Strep. mutans and Sobrinus) that cause almost all cavities. Antibacterial Compounds from Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Dr. Jian He, et. al., J Nat. Prod. 2006, 69, 121-124.

This new product selectively kills only the cavity-forming bugs and leaves all the good bacteria alone. These microbiologists developed a new class of bacterial-selective molecules to target only the cavity-forming bugs and deliver the antimicrobial herb selectively to the target bugs. Antimicrobial Agents and Chem., Randall Eckert, et. al., Nov, 2006, vol.50, no 11. Only 15mg of licorice powder per lollipop eliminates 99.9% of these bacteria in the mouth, in 5-10 minutes. The company developed the candy as a lollipop, in order to have the exposure of the mouth to the active ingredient over this longer amount of time.

This groundbreaking new product, Dr. John’s Herbal Lollipop, combines 3000 year old Chinese traditional herbal medicine, with modern peptide science to give us a delicious, safe, effective way to eliminate cavity-forming bugs while preserving the pro-biotic(good bug) benefits of the healthy normal bugs.

Patients now have an easy, delcious way to fight back and eliminate the cavity bugs in thier mouths, at home, and avoid the discomfort and cost of dental fillings and crowns. One Dr. John’s Herbal lollipop, 2 times a day for 10 days disables and kills the cavity-forming bugs in the mouth for 12-27 weeks. Therefore, use of the lollipops dosing 20 pack between 2-4 times a year combined with a good dental hygiene program and proper diet effectively stops cavities.

Finally, a delicious, safe, effective, sugar-free herbal lollipop that kills the bugs that cause cavities. Call the office to order or buy online at www.drjohns.com.

We all know that vitamin D3 is needed to build strong bones and prevent rickets and osteoporosis. New data from 2700 laboratory studies and 275 population studies are linking low vitamin D3 levels to: Breast cancer, Colon/rectal cancers, Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart failure, inflammatory bowel diseases and other cancers.

They are finding that vitamin D3 is important in making the links(glue) that holds all of the body’s cells together. Without adequate levels of vitamin D3, the cells begin to separate and cancer cells invade the tissues’ surfaces and multiple.

You can easily reduce your risk of Breast cancer by 80% or more, reduce your risk of Colon cancer by 50% or more and reduce your risk of all other cancers by 77% or more with supplementation of vitamin D3.

A good target on vitamin D3 serum tests in your blood is 40-60 mg/ml. The average level for the United States population is 25 mg/ml. This is to low. My D3 serum level tested, after living for 37 years in sunny California was 22 mg/ml. This is very low and puts me at risk for cancer and the other disease listed above.

A simple, inexpensive vitamin D3 supplement can make huge differences in your health and risk of cancers and other health conditions. I think it is so important that I am carrying the supplement at the dental office and online at: http://myghcstore.com/stephenalawrence .

We also carry, at the office, the vitamin D3 home test kits, made available through the GrassrootsHealth organization. They are dedicated to raising the awareness of how we can reduce the risk of Breast cancer through vitamin D3 supplementation.

Vitamin D3 is a powerful, easy, and inexpensive way to prevent all cancers and esp. Breast and Colon cancers.

The U.S. is in negotiations with other countries around the globe to finalize a United Nations treaty on mercury in the environment.

In the treaty the U.S. supports:

The elimination of primary mercury mining

Export restrictions to reduce the supply of elemental mercury in commerce

Environmentlly sound storage for every country

Phase down and eventual phase out of mercury used in:

Batteries

Measuring devices

Electric switches and relays

Mercury containing lamps

Dental amalgams

The treaty development process is still ongoing but this U.S. leadership in the phase down of mercury in our enviroment and eventual phase out of mercury amalgams in dentistry is a big first step.

Maybe soon all dentists will be mercury-free and using alternative materials such as: resins, porcelians, golds, and zirconia materials that are already available.

Stay tune for regular updates to these negotiations and our next e

Mercury linked to Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, and Stroke

Your silver-mercury fillings have now been linked to coronary heart disease (CHD), myocardial infarction (MI), hypertension, cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), generalized atherosclerosis, irregular heart rate, kidney problems, sudden death, and total mortality.

Silver-mercury fillings are the most common source of elemental mercury vapor and the major source of human exposure to organic mercury. This mercury is the most dangerous of all heavy metals. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that silver-mercury fillings are the primary source of exposure to mercury in humans, greatly exceeding all other sources in the general population.

This mercury enters the body and attaches itself to enzymes and amino acids that you need to be healthy and survive. This mercury reduces your immune system defenses and increases your oxidative stress, increasing your risk for CVD and CVA. Selenium and fish containing omega-3 fatty acids reduce mercury-related CVD and CVA by binding with the mercury and making it less toxic.

The overall vascular effects of mercury include oxidative stress, inflammation, blood vessel abnormalities, immune system damage, and cell and organ failures. All of these abnormalities have the potential to increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. If you have a history of these or other vascular diseases and an exposure to mercury, then you should be evaluated for mercury toxicity. Specific testing for acute and chronic mercury toxicity and total body burden using hair, toenail, urine, stool and serum samples should be performed. The 24-hour urine measurements should be done with baseline and provoked samples. (Houston Mark C. MD, MS. “Role of Mercury Toxicity in Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke” Journal Clinical Hypertension, vol.113, no. 8, August 2011, 621-626)

This new research paper carefully evaluates and summaries the cardiovascular consequences of mercury toxicity in humans.

If you or a loved one has a history of exposure to mercury and a history of heart disease, then get evaluated by a physician familiar with mercury poisoning. Contact our office for referrals to a holistic physician.

Call our office if you are interested in having your present silver-mercury fillings removed safely and replaced with safer alternatives. I invite your comments and questions to this newly documented research on the toxicity of mercury in humans.
